Why Ottawa lawns need it
Most of this region sits on heavy clay. Clay compacts under foot traffic, snow load and spring melt, and compacted soil sheds water instead of absorbing it - which is why a lawn can be watered all summer and still thin out.
Core aeration is the mechanical fix: pull thousands of small plugs so the root zone can breathe. It is the highest-leverage hour your lawn gets all year, and it makes everything you do afterwards - overseeding, fertilising, watering - actually work.
Core aeration, not spike aeration
We pull cores, we do not poke holes. Spike aerators push soil sideways and compact the walls of the hole, which on clay makes the problem slightly worse. A core aerator removes soil entirely and leaves the plugs on the surface to break down - that is the version worth paying for.
When to book
Spring: late April to early June. Soil is moist, roots are moving, and the lawn has the whole season to fill in.
Fall: late August to mid October. Usually the better of the two - maximum root recovery before winter, and the ideal moment to overseed straight into the holes.
Once a year is plenty for most lawns. Twice is worth it for heavy clay, heavy dog or kid traffic, or a lawn you are actively trying to thicken.

- Mark your sprinkler headsif you have irrigation - we ask this when you book and flag it on the crew's job sheet, but visible markers are the real safeguard.
- Mow first, a little shorter than usual, so the machine reaches soil cleanly.
- Water the day before if it has been dry. Moist soil lets the tines pull full plugs; bone-dry clay just bounces them.
- Tell us about fresh sod or seed - if it went down inside the last two months the roots have not set and we should wait.
- Overseed right after for the best result. The open holes are the best seed bed you will get all year.
