Our mobile seasonal tire change is designed for customers who have separate summer and winter tire sets that are already mounted on their own rims.

If your tires need to be removed from one set of rims and installed onto another, specialized mounting and balancing equipment is required. This would need to be completed at a properly equipped tire shop.

Why seasonal timing matters

Winter tires are designed to remain flexible in colder temperatures, helping improve traction and control in snow, slush, frost and icy conditions. Summer and all-season tires are better suited to warmer roads and help prevent unnecessary wear on your winter tires.

A helpful guideline is to change:

• To winter tires when temperatures remain around or below 7°C
• Back to summer or all-season tires when temperatures remain consistently above 7°C

In Ottawa, this usually means changing to winter tires in October or early November and changing back in April.

More than simply changing the wheels

A seasonal tire change is also an opportunity to identify visible concerns before they become more serious. We check for signs such as:

Proper wheel torque matters

Wheel nuts must be tightened evenly and to the correct specification for your vehicle. Wheel nuts that are too loose can allow the wheel to move while driving. Wheel nuts that are overtightened can damage the studs, threads or wheels and make future removal difficult.

We use a torque wrench to tighten each wheel to the proper specification rather than relying only on an impact wrench or guesswork.

Don't skip the retorque

After a wheel has been removed and reinstalled, the wheel nuts should be checked again after the initial driving period recommended by the service provider, typically within approximately 50 to 150 kilometres.

There is no point where checking becomes useless. If you have already driven 200 or 250 kilometres, the wheels should still be checked as soon as possible. The concern is simply that waiting longer means driving farther before a potentially loose wheel nut is identified.

Can I retorque the wheels myself?

Yes, provided you have a properly calibrated torque wrench, the correct socket, your vehicle's correct torque specification, and an understanding of the proper tightening sequence. A normal tire iron cannot confirm the correct torque, and an impact wrench should not be relied on for the final torque setting. Many customers prefer to have the retorque completed by the original service provider because it is quick and removes the guesswork.
